Mental Health Awareness Month: More Good Days Start with Mental Health

May 18, 2026

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind people that mental health is just as important as physical health.

This year’s Menta l Health America theme, “Turn Awareness into Action,” encourages people to take meaningful steps toward improving mental wellness and creating “More Good Days.”

At Castleview Hospital, we believe mental health is an important part of overall health. Mental well-being affects how we think, feel, handle stress, connect with others, and experience daily life. When we prioritize mental health, we create more opportunities for joy, resilience, connection, and healing.

Mental Health Challenges Are Common

Mental health struggles are more common than many people realize. According to Mental Health America, nearly 1 in 5 American adults experiences a diagnosable mental health condition each year, and nearly half of Americans will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lifetime.

Mental health conditions can affect anyone — regardless of age, background, or profession. Anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, trauma, and emotional exhaustion often impact people quietly, even when everything may appear “fine” on the surface.

In rural communities especially, many people feel pressure to push through stress without asking for support. But seeking help is not a sign of weakness — it’s an important step toward healing and creating more good days ahead.

What Does “More Good Days” Mean?

Having more good days does not mean every day will be perfect. Life will always include stress, uncertainty, and difficult moments. But caring for your mental health can improve your ability to cope, recover, connect with others, and find balance even during challenging seasons.

Sometimes, creating more good days starts with small, manageable actions:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Taking breaks when needed
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Moving your body
  • Connecting with supportive people
  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Talking openly about stress or emotions
  • Seeking professional support when needed

Even small steps can have a meaningful impact over time.

Recognizing When You May Need Support

Mental health challenges can look different for everyone, but common signs may include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally drained
  • Persistent anxiety or sadness
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Loss of motivation or enjoyment
  • Increased irritability
  • Withdrawing from others
  • Feeling hopeless or stuck

Recognizing these signs early and reaching out for support can make a significant difference.

Supporting Mental Health Together

Mental Health Awareness Month is also about supporting one another as a community. A simple conversation, checking in on a friend, or listening without judgment can help someone feel seen and supported.

At Castleview Hospital, we are committed to supporting healthier communities — including emotional and mental well-being. By continuing conversations around mental health and encouraging people to seek help when needed, we can help create more understanding, connection, and hope.

Help Is Available

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health concerns, support is available. Speaking with a healthcare provider or mental health professional can be an important first step.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for immediate support.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, take time to care for yourself, check in on others, and remember: small steps toward mental wellness can lead to more good days ahead.
